In February 1977, a group of graduates from Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) set up the AMASIM—Advanced Management Alumni of SIM and started a Toastmasters Club. However, due to the lack of logistical support, it became autonomous and opened its membership to the public in 1980. The Club's name was subsequently changed to Lion City Toastmasters Club (TMC) that year.
In 1299, a Prince named Sang Nila Utama, thought he saw a lion while hunting in Temasek (the old name of Singapore) and he subsequently renamed the city “Singapura” – derived from the Malay words “Singa” for Lion and “Pura” for city. Hence, "Lion City" is another name for Singapore, and that is why we name our club "Lion City Toastmasters Club".)
Lion City Toastmasters Club is the 2nd oldest toastmasters club in Singapore and over the years, has helped to sponsor other toastmasters clubs, such as the SIM TMC in 1984, Tampines Changkat TMC in 1993, New Millennium TMC in 1998, Certified Public Accountant (Australia) TMC in 1999 and Singapore Tourism Board TMC in 2000.
Our members are also active in the Toastmasters International movement and served in various leadership capacities. Our club member, Augustine Lee DTM, is the first International Director from Singapore and aptly given the title Past International Director (PID).
We provide a mutually supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
In Lion City Toastmasters Club, we believe in “Every Member Matters” and we are committed to making our club the “Premier Public Speaking Club” in Singapore!
