In February 1977, a group of graduates from Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) set up the AMASIM—Advanced Management Alumni of SIM and started a Toastmasters Club. However, due to the lack of logistical support, it became autonomous and opened its membership to the public in 1980. The Club's name was subsequently changed to Lion City Toastmasters Club (TMC) that year.
In 1299, a Prince named Sang Nila Utama, thought he saw a lion while hunting in Temasek (the old name of Singapore) and he subsequently renamed the city “Singapura” – derived from the Malay words “Singa” for Lion and “Pura” for city. Hence, "Lion City" is another name for Singapore, and that is why we name our club "Lion City Toastmasters Club".)
Lion City Toastmasters Club is the 2nd oldest toastmasters club in Singapore and over the years, has helped to sponsor other toastmasters clubs, such as the SIM TMC in 1984, Tampines Changkat TMC in 1993, New Millennium TMC in 1998, Certified Public Accountant (Australia) TMC in 1999 and Singapore Tourism Board TMC in 2000.
Our members are also active in the Toastmasters International movement and served in various leadership capacities. Our club member, Augustine Lee DTM, is the first International Director from Singapore and aptly given the title Past International Director (PID).
We provide a mutually supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.
In Lion City Toastmasters Club, we believe in “Every Member Matters” and we are committed to making our club the “Premier Public Speaking Club” in Singapore!

Over 3 sessions in October and November, we ran our essentials of Public Speaking in 3 high-impact Presentation Masterclass sessions.
Conducted by experienced speakers including National Public Speaking and Evaluation champions Wekie Tay, DTM, and Benjamin Leow, DTM, our participants learnt how to inspire, persuade and connect with their audience.
Everyone went away with renewed confidence to express themselves whether it's in a boardroom, social gathering or when giving a wedding toast.
With our lively group of senior professionals from PhDs to CEOs, there were also plenty of laughs and yummy snacks to be had!
3 sessions. One supportive community. Skills for a lifetime.
Sophia shared her wisdom on how to craft relatable messages by speaking authentically and allowing our personality to shine through. Through her speech, she gave advice on what it means to be authentic and how to be our authentic selves. Translating that authenticity into our speeches would increase our relatability to the audience. This allows us to achieve the primary goal of any speech, which is to connect with your audience.
Dr Zhaoru shared her tips to improve our next important presentation, speech or performance.
She shared her preparation cycle of "Polish script, Practice delivery, Prepare for the stage" that would enable everyone to engage their audience with a confident and lively presentation. The audience were able to absorb her tips through hands on exercises involving Linguine - yum!
Led by Dr Antoni (LCTMC member, Founder and Lead Coach at Peak Resilience), our first Public Speaking Masterclass for 2025 kicked off on 24 Feb 2025.
Together, we explored the psychology of fear during public speaking, techniques to reduce anxiety, gain presence and how to use our own strengths and weaknesses to our advantage.
